Compress PDF

Smaller files for simpler sharing.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How do you compress a PDF?

Reduce file size while keeping text and images readable enough for their intended use.

  1. Keep the original

Note its size and decide whether the document is intended for screens or print.

  2. Choose suitable quality

In a capable tool, choose image resolution and compression settings.

  3. Create a separate copy

Apply compression without overwriting your original.

  4. Compare size and readability

Inspect small text, drawings, and scanned pages at a suitable zoom.

This guide explains the general workflow in an application that supports the operation. This version offers file selection and type/size checks; it does not generate processed output.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about the workflow, file quality, and situations you may encounter.

Can every PDF shrink without quality loss?

No. Results depend on content and previous compression. Removing image data can reduce quality.

Why did my PDF shrink only slightly?

An already optimized or mainly text-based document may have little redundant data left to remove.

Should I use the smallest file for printing?

The smallest result is not always suitable. Low-resolution images may print poorly; inspect a sample print.

Can compression affect forms or comments?

Some optimizer settings flatten forms or discard comments. Apply only the cleanup options you actually need.

Is repeated compression a good idea?

Repeated lossy image compression can reduce detail. Compare alternative settings using the original copy.

Can I complete the operation and download a file on this page?

This version supports file selection and checks of file type, size, and count. Processing is not connected, so it does not convert, edit, or generate downloads. The guide describes a workflow in an application that supports the operation.

Which file types and sizes can I select?

This tool accepts PDF file extensions. You can select up to 20 files, with a 25 MB per-file limit and 100 MB total. Checking an extension does not verify that the file contents are valid or undamaged.

Are my selected files sent to a server?

In this version, file contents are not read or uploaded. Selections stay in the tab’s memory and are cleared on refresh. File names, extensions, and sizes are used only to display and check your selection.
